How We Saved Our Neighborhood from a Wildfire
With the CZU Lightning Complex fire bearing down on them, a rogue group of citizens banded together to stay and defend their homes in the mountains above Santa Cruz, California. Here's how they fought the fire—and won.
We welcome volunteers of all ages, skills and physical abilities. From clearing brush to supporting events, contributing to our newsletter or community outreach we encourage you to contribute. If you are interested in volunteering please submit the form below. Here are some of the skills we need:
Role | Description |

Brush Clearance | Removal and processing of brush to create defensible zones and shaded fuel breaks. |
Business Relations | Work with local businesses for sponsorships, wildfire education and event participation. |
Event Support | Support our local events including venue setup, guest checkin, food and beverage services, audio visual, music, etc. |
Graphic Design | Create logos and graphics to enhance our website, social media, signs, posters, merchandise and event banners. |
Home Advisor | Learn about improving home wildfire resilience and safety. Use your training to provide onsite recommendations to your neighbors. |
Photography & Video | Show the community your creative side with beautiful photos of our forest. Capture our projects and collect resident testimonals on video. |
Social Media | Assist with our website, newsletter content, Instagram and Facebook. |
